Apple’s Vision Air and Smart Glasses

The Future of Mixed Reality and Wearables

Apple

Apple is accelerating its expansion into the extended reality (XR) and wearable tech market with a bold roadmap over the next two years.

Multiple analyst reports and insider leaks reveal that the tech giant is preparing to launch a Vision Air mixed reality headset and AI-powered smart glasses, aimed at a broader consumer base seeking affordability, portability, and functionality.

Vision Air: A Lighter, Cheaper Mixed Reality Headset

Set to launch by late 2025 or early 2026, the Apple Vision Air headset is designed as a lighter and more affordable alternative to the current Vision Pro. According to leaks, the Vision Air will:

  • Be 40% lighter than the Vision Pro
  • Feature a new form factor
  • Use Apple’s next-generation iPhone processor, expected to debut in 2027
  • Incorporate lightweight materials like magnesium alloy and a glass-to-glass replacement design

This redesign targets users who found the original Vision Pro too bulky or expensive. With its focus on comfort and a competitive price point, Apple is clearly aiming for a more mass-market appeal in the growing mixed reality headset space.

Vision Pro Refresh and Future Plans

Before the Vision Air arrives, Apple is expected to launch a Vision Pro refresh in 2025, powered by a faster M5 chip. While this will maintain the premium status of the Vision Pro, a Vision Pro 2—rumored to feature a Mac-grade processor—is reportedly scheduled for 2028. This strategy shows Apple’s intent to keep advancing high-end XR while making room for lighter consumer devices like the Vision Air.

Smart Glasses: Apple’s Answer to Meta’s Ray-Bans

Perhaps the most anticipated innovation on Apple’s roadmap is its AI-integrated smart glasses, expected by late 2026. These advanced wearables are being designed to rival Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, offering a sleek yet highly functional solution for everyday use. Core features will include:

  • Built-in cameras, microphones, and speakers
  • AI capabilities via Siri integration
  • Support for phone calls, music, translation, and navigation

Prototype mass production is expected to begin by the end of 2025, with a commercial launch following soon after.

Apple’s Wearable Future: A Phased Rollout

Apple’s XR and smart wearable roadmap is clear:

  • 2025: Vision Pro refresh (M5 chip)
  • 2025–2026: Launch of Vision Air headset
  • Late 2026: AI-powered smart glasses
  • 2028: Vision Pro 2 with Mac-grade performance

This phased expansion shows that Apple is not only responding to consumer feedback but also staying ahead in the competitive XR and smart wearable market.
