In a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, actor Derek Dixon accuses Tyler Perry of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and retaliation during the time Dixon worked on The Oval, where he appeared in 85 episodes. The complaint states Perry used his influence and authority to create a coercive, exploitative environment.
According to Dixon, the relationship began positively with promises of career advancement and opportunities, including producing a pilot. However, things allegedly turned darker when he declined Perry’s sexual advances. The lawsuit outlines unsolicited texts, one reading,
“What will it take for you to have guilt-free sex?”
Dixon also claims there were physical incidents, such as Perry allegedly removing his clothing against his will.
Dixon's departure from the show followed his 2024 complaint to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which he says yielded no results.

Derek Dixon, a playwright and actor from North Carolina, is known for both theatre and television. Before joining The Oval, he appeared in Ruthless and won acclaim for stage plays like The Lion in Winter. His 2016 Essential Theatre Playwriting Award boosted his visibility.
He met Perry in 2019 while working at an event. Their relationship grew professionally, but according to Dixon, the nature of Perry’s conduct deteriorated into manipulation and abuse. He claims that rejecting Perry’s advances resulted in a chilling effect on his career, with his character eventually being written out of The Oval.
Tyler Perry’s Response to the Allegations
Perry’s legal team has categorically denied the accusations. His attorney, Matthew Boyd, referred to the lawsuit as “a scam” and alleged Dixon is attempting extortion.
Tyler will not be shaken down,” Boyd said. We are confident these fabricated claims of harassment will fail.
The defence maintains that Perry did not engage in any of the alleged misconduct and that Dixon’s claims are entirely without merit.
